Clinical Hypnotherapy
Clinical Hypnotherapy, in its essence is simple. It utilises the power of your sub-conscious mind, higher self or inner mind. You were born with this power to heal yourself, it never goes away but sometimes we forget we have it, loose it within our selves or feel it has been taken away from us. The truth is, this ability is always within us, every single one of us, because it is natural, organic and essentially human.
Hypnotherapy begins by inducing a state of trance or an altered state of awareness. Whenever you zone out, daydream or go into your imagination you are in a hypnotic state. It is a natural state that we go in and out of all day long, whether you are aware of it or not. Most often this occurs while driving, exercising or watching T.V. The brain switches off or zones out and you become so tuned into what you are doing that other sounds, sights and sensations fade into the background, that is, until something jolts you back to conscious awareness.
The pioneers of Clinical Hypnotherapy like Dave Elman and Dr. Milton Erickson discovered that when you are in this altered state of awareness you are more open to therapeutic suggestion. This is because the trance state allows the critical faculty of your mind, which lies between your conscious and sub-conscious minds, to be by-passed. The critical faculty of your brain is the part that wants to judge, analyse, categorise and understand everything before it accepts it to be true or important.
By encouraging a hypnotic state and by-passing the critical faculty we are able to tap into a part of your mind that is more open to learn, receive, share, grow and change. You may remember this potentiality from when you were a young child. You thought you were the king or queen of your world and could do anything and be anyone you chose to. You believed you were able to achieve any goal and create any dream. This is the part of knows how to be happy and free of worry. And it is a part of you that actually doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined. You may still be aware of this inner resource, perhaps when you watch a scary movie and jump even thought you are safe in your lounge room, or when you imagine a foul smell and feel nauseous. The section of your brain this resource resides in is called The Limbic System and is also in control of laughter, moods, affection, emotions, behaviours and much more.
Imagine if, despite any pain, suffering or hardships you experienced in your past, that your inner child could still feel like it has the power and ability to achieve any goal. This is what Clinical Hypnotherapy does. It taps into your natural ability to be happy and content. Through the use of various psychotherapeutic techniques, while under the trance state, a Clinical Hypnotherapist can help you to heal, resolve, relieve and reduce all negative symptoms, habits, emotions and thought patterns. Almost like a new baby without the weights of life or the burdens of past, the sub-conscious mind can be light and free, ready to move forward. Leaving your current adult conscious mind more focused, with clarity and better able to utilise your wisdom, logic and analysis to help you continuously update, set and accomplish your goals.
Of course, your sub-conscious mind is your own, so if anyone, even the most skilled hypnotherapist, asked you to do or say anything against your own moral code of behaviour you simply will not do it. Hypnotherapy is, after all, suggestion. If you do not want to change or do not agree with the change, you will not
